What’s Love Got to Do With it?

Singer Tina Turner won a Grammy in 1984 for the pop song “What’s Love Got To Do With It”  In the song she sings:

“What’s love got to do, got to do with it
     What’s love but a second-hand emotion
What’s love got to do, got to do with it
Who needs a heart when a heart can be boken….”

Many today may have that same thought process.  They may be saying “What’s love got to do with it” concerning a host of their problems.  The answer to that question is “EVERYTHING.”  The answer to all of life is love.

The love that is the answer to everything is not just a warm and fuzzy feeling kind of love that one gets when they find someone attractive and engaging.  The love that is the answer to everything is not sensual.  It is not a love where one is prideful, self-seeking, a keeper of wrongs, vengeful, not easily angered, rude, or delights in evil.

The kind of love that is the answer to everything is the kind that Jesus commands for us to have and extend to others.  We are told in Matthew 22:37-40 that Jesus told the Pharisees the greatest commandment is to:  “Love the Lord your God with all of your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  This is the first and greatest Commandment.  And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.  All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”  Jesus was saying the love of God and the love of others is the most supreme thing anyone an engage in.  In fact, everything that is good or will be good hangs on those two commandments.  If you take away either one, whatever your endeavor is, it will not have the blessing that God wants to give you.  This kind of love is a dedicated, or committed love that is selfless.  It is a love that seeks out the best for the other person and the relationship.  It is the kind of love that sent Him to the cross to die a gruesome, but glorifying death.  It is wjat tje Greels call “agape” love–self-sacrificing, committed love that seeks the best for the other person.  God, who the Bible says is agepe, loved s so much that he gave of Himself and suffered the death on the cross for the sins of humanity that whoever would believe Him as the Son of God named Jesus, would not suffer eternal condemnation, but would rather have eternal blessing in heaven with Him.

Think of what friendships could look like if both parties did ‘t just say they loved us, but truly were committed to seek the best for the other and the relationship.  Think of what marriages would look like if both spouses, didn’t just say but truly sought the best for the other and the relationship.  Think of what our communities, country, and world would look like if this were the case for them.  Think of what would happen to the murder rate if we loved each other in this manner.  I once had someone tell me it i natural to gossip (tear each other down) and there was nothing I could do about it.  I had someone else tell me once that it was natural to get angry, embittered and unforgiving.  I agreed with both, but say to them and others today that is why we need the supernatural power of God within us to do so.  That is what God’s Word tells us.  Christians hve the supernatural spirit of God living in them when they accepted Christ as their persona Savior and Lord.  It is because of Him, and Him alone, that I am able to love and forgive everyone-the murderer of my father, those who have tried to hurt me physicaly, mentally, emottionally, and spiritually.  What does love have to do with it?  EVERYTHING.
